Tour Harvard – iPhone Application

If you have every walked, driven, biked or ran through Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA, you have probably spotted those large groups of tourists being lead around by tour guides wearing straw hats and carrying signs. This is the Hahvahd Tour, and now they can say, “There’s an app for that”.

Today, a new application that we created went live into the iTunes App Store. Trademark Tours Presents: Harvard University, is a campus tour application for the prestigious institution, and is filled to the brim with great, rich content.

Creature Features

  • Integrated Google Maps and GPS
  • “Live Tour” footage
  • Bonus Content Galore!
  • Streaming Audio
  • Harvard Square Business Directory
  • Free Souvenier Map
  • Integrated video in the app, no buffering
  • Ability to jump to a stop anytime you wish
  • Development Insight

This application was built using PhoneGap, an open source framework that allows for developing mobile applications natively using HTML/CSS and JavaScript. The benefit of using PhoneGap over Apple’s own XCode Environment and Objective C programming, is the portability to other devices such as Android OS and Blackberry Apps.

When developing this way, you can easily develop lighter-weight “Web Apps” that actually just use the browser framework that is native to the platform, rather than writing a code base from scratch. This elevates errors, but is not without some higher performance drawbacks. While things can run incredibly smooth in the web framework of these mobile devices, any more advanced animations, gaming or hardware intense acceleration is better off inside the native language.

This app also uses JQuery along with PhoneGap to create animations and navigation. Video and audio are using HTML5 standards.

Smart Women Company:
SWC was an amazing client with a brilliant message and an ideal brand. That said, somehow over the years, sales had dropped off significantly almost driving the business to its breaking point. With research, it was determined that because the brand had not kept up with social trends, the core connection to consumers had been almost entirely lost.

Dirk+Weiss was commissioned by SWC owner/founder Julie Hellwich, to step in as the marketing arm of the company for a period of 1 year. In that year, The brand found its revival. Even amidst a declining economy, site hits are at a record high and more importantly, sales have increased over 200%. The Smart Women brand has reconnected with its target demographic and continues to grow on every level. DW is very proud to have had the opportunity to work with such a positive brand to promote such a noble message.

This case clearly provides evidence that an evolving demographic calls for an evolving brand. A social trends marketing solution may be exactly what your brand is in need of. Contact Dirk+Weiss to schedule a consultation.

Digital Publishing:
Digital publishing or iTunes Books is the fastest growing itunes category to date. With that Dirk+Weiss noticed a very convenient loop hole in digitally publishing books to the itunes store. Many writers and publishers alike would love their next book to be available for digital purchase though the itunes store. Even better, why not skip the printing and reinvest the money strictly in marketing your newest novel!?

Dirk+Weiss decided to take this concept one step further and say “what if it were dirt cheap too?” With this thought, our $199 digital publishing program was born. Offering consumers large and small, the opportunity to see their work in the iTunes store for a fraction of the printing cost was a slam dunk. Today DW has published numerous book and magazine titles and digital publishing has become one of our fastest growing programs.

It just goes to show… Find a hole and shoot the gap!

AIGA – Boston:
Every two years, AIGA Boston calls for contestants to submit their best design work to a regional competition: The Best of New England. Dirk+Weiss was commissioned to create a new strategy for generating submissions. Our solution included a completely new site dedicated solely to the event including a new system for online submission, payment, and social media interaction.

The success story here is in the numbers. With over 500 submissions (double the previous year), 10,000+ unique visitors, 200,000+ page views and nearly 1500 YouTube video plays in the course of 60 days. Our marketing plan made participation effortless and in turn, the results were remarkable.

Anyone Can Swiss:
AnyoneCanSwiss.com was a Dirk+Weiss hit single. ACS was developed as an exercise in manufacturing site traffic through a very methodical process we refer to as “online discourse.” Teamed with strategic influence marketing we created a brand, a buzz, international recognition and ultimately an award winning website. Recognized by the worlds leading design organization (AIGA) ACS was granted an award for best web design in the New England chapter.

Dirk+Weiss engaged an entire demographic of over 50k unique visitors within the course of 48 hours. By simply peaking the interest of a handful of key blogs, ACS went viral. This resulted in not only site hits a whirlwind of site hits but over 1.5 million resulting documents providing concrete proof of engagement or interaction on the part of the consumer. This is what we call a hit single.
